Web update: Students deliver petition asking U. to pay more

Roughly 60 students delivered a petition with more than 600 signatures to the University Friday demanding Brown increase its payments to Providence. The group said they believe the University needs to provide more financial support to the city in order to rebuild Brown's relationship with Providence, according to a press release.

The group entered University Hall just after noon Friday to present the petition to President Ruth Simmons. Since Simmons was not in her office, they handed it over to an administrator, who promised the president would receive it.

The University paid more than $4 million in voluntary payments and property taxes to the city in 2011.
