Sports Roundup, April 1

This spring break saw several impressive performances from Brown’s athletic teams. Highlights from this weekend included a 4-2 victory over Yale for the men’s tennis team, women’s lacrosse defeating Fresno State University 19-13 and 10 first place finishes for track and field at the Bryant Black and Gold Invitational. Ijeoma Uche ’21 set a new program record in the long jump with a leap of 20-7, eclipsing the previous best of 20-3.75 earned by Carly Paul ’18.5 last season.

Men’s tennis

The men’s tennis team opened its Ivy League slate this weekend with success, defeating Yale 4-2. No. 78 Charles Tan ’19 recorded his fifth singles win of the year to secure the match for Bruno.

Roger Chou ’22 and Tan claimed a 6-3 victory in first doubles before Peter Litsky ’20 and Ben Collier ’21 won 6-4 in the closing match.

Brown gained momentum as Ching Lam ’21 posted a 6-1, 6-3 win in second singles, and Chou swept Arnav Dhingra 6-3, 7-5 to give the team a 3-0 lead. Yale claimed two matches to pressure Bruno, but Tan sealed the victory for the Bears with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) conquest over Andrew Heller in the fifth position.

The Bears will return to the court against Ivy opponents Cornell and No. 13 Columbia this weekend.

Women’s lacrosse

The women’s lacrosse team prevailed over Fresno State 19-13 Saturday. Risa Mosenthal ’21 set the pace for the Bears in a historic day, as she surpassed a program record for goals in a game — scoring nine. Mosenthal had previously tied the record at eight goals against Quinnipiac University Feb. 16.

The Bears came out of the locker room ready to play, and quickly jumped out to a 12-5 first half lead. Mosenthal got the scoring going with the first two goals early in the match, and she would finish the first half with seven of her nine goals.

Mosenthal now has 101 career goals in 25 games, placing her at seventh in the all-time program scoring list as a sophomore.

Three other Bears scored hat tricks on the day, and Maggie Fowler ’21 notched three assists to add to her team-high 22 assists.

The Bears will take to the field again Saturday at home against Penn at noon.

Track and field

The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Raleigh Relays and the Bryant Black and Gold Invitational this weekend.

Uche starred for the Bears, setting a program record in the long jump with a length of 20-7. She finished second place in the Raleigh Relays, while Zion Lewis ’20 also claimed second place in the triple jump.

At the Black and Gold Invitational, the Bears posted numerous impressive performances, with 10 Bears earning first place finishes. Hannah Barakat ’21 set a meet record in the 200 meter race, and Elise Claffey ’19 set another meet record in the 800 meter.

Erin McMeniman ’22 earned first place in the javelin throw, and her mark of 148-3 launched her to fourth place in the program record book.

Michael Coppolino ’20 also won first place in the hammer with a throw of 191-6, the ninth longest in program history.

The men’s and women’s track and field teams will next compete in the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton and the University of Massachusetts Invitational at Amherst this weekend.
