Between waves of COVID-19 cases and a steady rise in the vaccination rate on College Hill, Brown’s campus was alive again in the summer of 2021. Rather than staying at home, the majority of the class of 2024 returned to school for a summer semester, a component of the University’s three-semester calendar implemented to de-densify campus during the pandemic.

Over those two months, The Herald asked eight first-years to document a day in their summer lives at Brown through the lens of a disposable camera. Whether it was eating in dining halls, taking in-person classes or relaxing on the Main Green, they captured ordinary yet precious moments on campus that have been deeply missed.

Although the recent rise in cases and new temporary COVID-19 restrictions have once again put a full return to normalcy on hold, the past summer highlights what Brown once was to many students and what we can expect for the future.
