On Wednesday evening, the Department of Public Safety was notified of a swastika found carved into a restroom door in a residence hall on the Pembroke campus, according to a Thursday afternoon community-wide email from Executive Vice President for Planning and Policy Russell Carey ’91. The incident is currently under investigation by the DPS.
The symbol was “immediately removed by repairing and repainting the door,” according to the email.
“Any incident of hate on our campus is deeply troubling and antithetical to the University’s mission, values, Code of Conduct and community expectations,” Carey wrote. “We condemn such behavior in the clearest possible terms.”
The reported incident comes amid a Title VI investigation by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights into the University, which was expanded from a narrower investigation into alleged antisemitism at Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School during the school’s May 2024 commencement ceremony.
In April, a White House official confirmed to The Herald that the Trump administration plans to halt $510 million in federal funding to the University over concerns regarding its handling of alleged antisemitism and diversity, equity and inclusion policies.
In his Thursday email, Carey noted that “an incident of antisemitic hate in a residence hall is especially concerning,” adding that the University is “committed to ensuring our community has an environment free from discrimination and harassment.”
