Former Chancellor Samuel Mencoff ’78 P’11 P’15 — who led the Brown Corporation from 2016 to 2024 — will chair the Board of Directors of Brown University Health starting Dec. 9, the hospital system announced earlier this month.
The move follows an expanded affiliation and investment agreement between the University and the hospital system announced last summer. Under this agreement, the hospital system, which was previously known as Lifespan, was renamed to Brown University Health.
Mencoff currently serves on both the Brown Corporation and Brown Health’s Board of Directors, but his tenure on the Corporation will end on June 30. The expansion agreement stipulates that individuals cannot concurrently serve as a member of the Corporation and the chairman of Brown Health’s Board of Directors, according to University Spokesperson Brian Clark.
Mencoff was a founding partner and co-CEO of Madison Dearborn Partners, and he currently serves as the chairman and CEO of Temple Hall Group. He also holds other leadership positions across national boards like the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago and the John Carter Brown Library.
“His deep ties to Brown and his experience at the intersection of business, healthcare and education make him uniquely qualified to guide our system well into the future,” said John Fernandez, president and CEO of Brown Health, in the press release.
