Current estimates predict 12 to 18 inches of snow during the winter storm.

The University has canceled in-person classes scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26, Provost Francis Doyle announced in an email to the Brown community. Faculty are able to hold class this Monday remotely at their discretion.

“Though conditions can change, the latest forecast calls for 12–18 inches of snow in our area,” Doyle wrote. “All members of the community are strongly advised to avoid all non-essential travel and to remain indoors during the height of the storm.”

A winter storm warning will be in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday. It is still being determined what in-person operations will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

The email warns that snow is expected to start falling between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Jan. 25, with the heaviest snowfall expected between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Staff “designated as essential because their responsibilities include non-deferrable services” must report to work as directed by management, according to the email. University administrative and academic offices will be closed on Monday. Both the Sharpe Refectory and Verney-Woolley Dining Hall are expected to have normal dining hours, while other dining service units may be closed or operating on a modified schedule.

Doyle added that Brown University Shuttle, operated by private transportation company Transdev, will decide separately whether to run shuttle services on Monday.

This is a developing story. Check back for more updates.
