Letter: Brown should bring back Rhody Fresh

To the Editor:

I was disappointed this weekend to discover that Brown’s tradition of providing Rhody Fresh milk, and only Rhody Fresh milk, to its students had ended. On what I expected to be a normal evening’s trip to Josiah’s for some milk and a snack, I was surprised to find a fridge stocked with milk from Hood Farms in lieu of the beloved offerings from Rhody Fresh. Even such a forward-thinking institution as Brown, one well-used to pushing the boundaries, should also seek to maintain some tradition, especially one as wholesome as that of providing a locally produced, home-grown brand of milk. Especially when Rhode Island, in particular, is facing such a tough recovery from the recent economic crisis, it is shameful to farm out our milk supply to Massachusetts-based dairy producers like Hood Farms rather than supporting local, family-owned business. I can only hope that this was an isolated incident caused by some unforeseen circumstances.
