Alert student, DPS officers foil laptop thieves

Thanks to the effort of an alert student and Department of Public Safety officers, two would-be laptop thieves were caught and arrested early Sunday morning on the Pembroke Campus.

According to the DPS report, two men were seen walking out of a New Pembroke dorm room with two laptops around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. A female student, noticing the two men, raised a minor commotion about the possible larceny, which alerted a DPS officer just outside the dorm. Several other campus officers were called to the scene and the two men, who were not Brown students, were arrested, said DPS Capt. Emil Fioravanti.

"Everything worked out really well, and no one was hurt," Fioravanti said. "The laptops were recovered and it was just a good ending for the people who potentially could have lost a laptop."

Fioravanti suspected that the victims had left their doors unlocked, which allowed the thieves easy access to the laptops. He warned students to keep their doors locked.
