To the Editor:
As local politics rears its head in the form of an impending City Council election ("Ris '05 will challenge Segal for Council seat," Sept. 26), I'd like to take a few sentences to praise our Ward 1 incumbent David Segal. I've grown accustomed to looking around at panel discussions, group meetings and activist trainings to see, lo-and-behold, our councilman participating alongside my fellow Brown students. On a very tangible level, Segal has passed resolutions to support campaigns that Brown students have taken an active interest in, including the Right to Vote Bill and the Medical Marijuana Bill. Segal has also directed tens of thousands of dollars from the Community
Development Block Grant towards the Family Life Center, which does critical work relating to issues of incarceration and transition from prison into the community.
These brief examples and Segal's constant presence are illustrative of Segal's strong commitment to truly involving our community in the political process in Providence, and genuinely advocating directly for the issues that we as students are working to move forward.
