College Republicans hold Freedom Week vigil

About 20 members of the Brown College Republicans and Brown Democrats gathered on the steps of Faunce House Tuesday night at 9:45 p.m. to take part in a candlelight vigil honoring "all people who have died in the name of freedom," according to College Republican Elizabeth Muscarella '07.

The College Republicans organized the event and invited the Brown Dems.

The vigil was held in conjunction with Freedom Week, which runs Nov. 7-12.

Freedom Week encompasses both Veterans Day and Nov. 9, the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which President Bush declared World Freedom Day in 2001.

"World Freedom Day celebrates the fall of the Berlin Wall, but this (vigil) is about much more than that," Muscarella said.

After candles were lit in a circle, two poems were read, followed by a moment of silence for individuals and regimes that stand up for freedom.
