Save the sunbathing for the Caribbean or a Corona commercial. And leave the crowded tourist traps to people who think Newport is the only place in Rhode Island outside of Providence. For the top Ocean State beach experience - featuring New England's archetypical ruggedness and breathtaking vistas - head to Beavertail State Park in Jamestown.

You won't find swarms of tourists here, nor should you expect expanses of sand, beach volleyball and bodysurfing. Instead, Beavertail offers miles of rocky coastline perfect for exploring, picnicking or simply relaxing. On a clear day, the ripple of waves in the distance, the splash of water on the rocks and the variety of sailboats and ships dotting the horizon make a dramatic backdrop for intimate conversation or quiet reflection.

After soaking up the view, explore the park on foot from one end to the other by navigating the waterside rocks or hiking trails. Stop at any of the four lookout points for yet another opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty.

When it's time to get a break from the breeze, head into the Beavertail Lighthouse, now a museum. The first lighthouse at the site was constructed in 1747 - making it the third oldest lighthouse in the country - but burned down only four years later. Its replacement stood for nearly a century, reliably guiding wayfarers carrying molasses, rum and slaves into Newport's harbor. The second incarnation was replaced by the current granite structure, built in 1856, which today houses the museum.

Sunsets at Beavertail are idyllic. For years couples have chosen Beavertail as the perfect spot for a proposal. But even if you're not looking to take the next step, few spots in Rhode Island are more romantic or picturesque for watching the sunset.

As your day at Beavertail State Park comes to a close and on your way home you pass tourists surging out of the typical beaches, rest assured that you enjoyed the true character of the Ocean State.
