String of larcenies account for much of summer crime

The following summary includes all major incidents reported to the Department of Public Safety between July 14 and Aug. 28. It does not include general service and alarm calls. The Providence Police Department also responds to incidents occurring off campus. DPS does not divulge information on open cases that are currently under investigation by the department, the PPD or the Office of Student Life.

Wednesday, July 19:Between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Complainants reported some of their belongings, including an iPod, had been stolen from a backpack that was left unattended in Petteruti Lounge in Faunce House. There are no suspects at this time.

Friday, July 21:9 a.m. Complainant reported that his silver, black and maroon bicycle had been stolen from a bike rack on Waterman Street sometime between 9:45 p.m. on July 20 and 9 a.m. on July 21. The bike was not secured at the time of the incident. There are no suspects at this time.

Saturday, July 22:12:23 a.m. While out on patrol on Angell Street, DPS officers heard a broadcast of a male subject fleeing the area of Macmillan Hall after an attempt to steal a bicycle in that area. The two officers identified a subject running toward them that matched the description. The suspect was ordered to stop and was taken into custody without incident. He was later transported to PPD headquarters for processing.

Wednesday, July 26:(No time specified.) Person reported that a silver Macintosh laptop computer was missing from the Sciences Library. DPS detectives are investigating the incident. There are no suspects at this time.

Friday, July 28:12:57 p.m. Person reported that a female subject took a hand truck from near Lincoln Field. A DPS officer unsuccessfully searched the area for the suspect. There are no suspects at this time.

Sunday, July 30:3 p.m. Complainant reported that two saws were taken from the workshop area near Churchill House at 155 Angell St. between 11:30 p.m. on July 28 and 3 p.m. on July 30. There are no suspects at this time.

Friday, Aug. 4:3 p.m. Complainant reported his wallet had been taken from his dresser when he returned to his room in Sears House, which he left unattended for approximately 15 minutes.

Monday, Aug. 7:7:30 a.m. Person reported that an envelope containing cash was taken from the Rockefeller Library between 11:45 a.m. on Aug.4 and 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 7. The envelope was in the drawer of a desk that had been left unsecured. DPS detectives are investigating the incident. There are no suspects at this time.

Wednesday, Aug. 9:9:45 p.m. While out on patrol, a DPS officer witnessed two females screaming and two male subjects running north on Thayer Street. Upon learning that the two young women had been robbed, the officer pursued and apprehended the suspects on Cushing Street. The victims reported they had been approached by four males while walking north on Thayer Street and said two of the four males attempted to grab the pocketbook and cellular phone of one of the victims. After additional DPS and PPD officers arrived on the scene, the suspects were transported to PPD headquarters for processing.

Tuesday, Aug. 22:12 p.m. Complainant reported that his backpack and its contents had been taken from the men's locker room in the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center. There are no suspects at this time.
