Apartments damaged in small fire

A fire Thursday night at the building at 669-685 North Main St. destroyed a furniture store and left residents living in apartments upstairs, including two Brown graduate students, looking for other places to stay.

Also among the 21 people displaced by the fire were Johnson and Wales students, according to the Providence Journal.

The Brown students stayed in a hotel for one night and have found another apartment over the weekend, Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services Margaret Klawunn said Sunday. Their apartment had not been damaged by the "small fire," she said.

The windows of the furniture store at 685 North Main St. were boarded up Sunday, but those were the only visible signs of the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined, Providence Fire Chief George Farrell told the Journal.
