Letter: Universities about more than just facts

To the Editor:

In his excellently written opinion piece ("What could Brown do for you?," Feb. 25), David Sheffield '11 does not share my holistic view of higher learning. Where he seems to view education as the mere acquisition of facts, my own learning at Brown is fed by what I get from my classes, but takes on meaning when I am able to metabolize this knowledge — to find the connections that allow the discovery of new meanings. This is accomplished through class discussions, conversations with professors and engagement with fellow students also trying to make sense of this embarrassment of intellectual riches. An online university would excel at overloading the student with facts, and falter in providing him with a sense of what to do with them.
