Letter: Brown soccer a class act

To the Editor:

I used to work at Brown from 1987 to 1994, and now I'm an adviser at the University of California at Berkeley. I work with a lot of members of Cal's soccer team and go to their games. This past weekend, I had to modify my usual "Go Bears" cheer, because both teams were Bears. Brown came to Berkeley to play the Cal Golden Bears in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA playoffs ("M. soccer loses 2-0 in Sweet 16," Nov. 29).

While Cal won the game, I just want to say how proud I was of the way the Brown men held themselves. Down a man from a second yellow card, they still fought to the end. They were gutsy and played with passion all the way to the end.

And I was especially impressed with how classy the Brown team is. They started the game by approaching the Cal players to shake hands — that was so good to see in a sport that is more and more becoming a dirty game. And when the Brown player received his second yellow, he didn't whine and moan and complain to the referee. If anything, his reaction indicated how upset he was that he had put his team into a tough spot since they would now play with one less man.

Good job, Bears!
