Budget woes rock school district

Jan. 11, 2010 — The Rhode Island Department of Education announces the original six low-achieving schools

Feb. 22 — Taveras fires all 1,926 of the district's teachers, citing the city's fiscal woes

Feb. 24 — Providence School Board votes 4-3 to approve the firings

March 3 — Taveras announces panel findings, $180 million two-year budget deficit

March 14 — Taveras and Providence Public School District Superintendent Tom Brady announce four school closings

March 29 — Brady resigns and the Rhode Island Department of Education announces five more schools targeted for intervention
