Letter: Therapy column is misinformed

To the Editor:

As a current PhD student in psychology and a former psychology student at Brown, I wanted to comment on Cara Dorris' '15 uninformed and unproductive column on therapy. Contrary to Dorris' beliefs, the most effective therapy for a variety of conditions is generally conducted in a small number of sessions and can be highly effective for a range of mild to serious mental health problems (see current research on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for more information). The idea that long-term therapy is necessary to effectively treat clients is outdated and incorrect. Therapy can be difficult, but it is also one of the best treatments we have for many problems that college students face. Please make sure that your columnists have adequate background knowledge in a subject before they spread potentially harmful misinformation.
