To the Editor:
I am writing this in response to the April 6 op-ed “Inviting Jeb Bush to speak is irresponsible.” Despite the fact I find myself disagreeing with many of the views of Jeb Bush, I believe any respectable educational institution should encourage and seek out diverse opinions.
Demonizing someone who doesn’t share your perspective or ethical convictions resembles tactics employed by Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare era in our country.
I have been guilty of preconceived notions about a person only to be proven wrong after the fact.
Listening to an opposing opinion often makes you more steadfast in your convictions and that’s a good thing!
Finally, as the saying goes:
“I wholly disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
