During the Beijing Olympics this past month, if you finished a race and didn’t break a record, you probably weren’t going home with a medal. Viewers grew so accustomed to seeing world records shattered that it practically became a formality. Admittedly, modern training techniques and improved race gear (such as the LZR suit in swimming) make the comparisons of today’s record holders to those of yesterday difficult.

I don’t want to be a Debbie-downer, but I really wasn’t all that excited Sunday night when the Red Sox clinched their second World Series title in four years. Say what you will about the team putting up the largest run differential ever in a World Series or a postseason – 99 runs scored to only 46 allowed.

Earlier this week, I was watching “Jim Rome is Burning” on ESPN, as any good American does, and Jim and his panelists were debating whether a recent block made below the knees by Miami Dolphins quarterback Trent Green was a “dirty hit.” If you’ve ever watched Jim Rome speak, you know that what he has to say isn’t particularly compelling.
