The December 2020 settlement was reached following months of legal standoff between the group of plaintiffs and the University. The settlement reinstated the women’s equestrian and fencing teams and put an end date on the original court judgment from Cohen v. Brown from 1998.

According to the Office of Residential Life website, gender inclusive housing “is intended primarily for students whose gender identity and/or legal sex do not allow them to be comfortable with a traditional roommate assignment (including but not limited to students who identify as transgender, genderqueer, etc.).”
