Big weekend for Brown sports

With a full schedule of games and competitions in the next weekend, here is a selection of sporting events to keep an eye on.

Thursday, April 28

SOFTBALL: Brown has two doubleheaders this weekend, starting with Thursday's match-up with local rival Providence College. Bruno will then continue the Ivy League season on Saturday with two games against last-place Yale in New Haven, Conn.

M. TENNIS: After clinching a share of the Ivy League title on Sunday against Harvard, the Bears travel to New Haven to take on Yale. A win will give Brown sole possession of the title.

M. and W. TRACK: The squads are both split in preparation for next week's Heptagonal Championships. Some members will be competing in the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday, while others will be traveling to Philadelphia to take part in the prestigious Penn Relays.

Friday, April 29

BASEBALL: The Bears are still a game back of Harvard after splitting four games with the Crimson Monday and Tuesday. In order to maintain hopes for the Red Rolfe Division Championship, Brown must take down third-place Yale, who is two games behind the Bears. Bruno will take on the Elis in a doubleheader at home on Friday starting at noon, then travel to New Haven on Saturday for two more games.

Saturday, April 30

Brown Athletics Hall of Fame Induction: Eight former players and one team will be honored at the Westin Hotel in downtown Providence. Among those being honored are: Richard Lloyd '92 (Basketball), Edward Patton '88 (Crew), T. Donald Thompson '56 (Football), Rebecca Kellar '97 (Ice Hockey), Michael Evans '76 (Lacrosse), Kari Klassen Johnson '98 (Swimming/Diving), and Meremu Chikwendu '98 (Track and Field). In addition to individuals, the 1984 Ivy League Champion women's soccer team that made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament will be inducted. William Pollard, meanwhile, will receive the Paul L. Maddock '33 Award.

M. and W. CREW: The Bears try to keep the momentum going after big wins last weekend. The men will face No. 4 Princeton, while the women have a tough dual meet against Yale and Northeastern University.

M. LACROSSE: It's senior day for Brown, which will take on No. 4 Cornell in the hopes of securing an NCAA tournament berth. According to Head Coach Scott Nelson, a victory here should ensure the Bears one of the 16 postseason spots.

W. LACROSSE: Head Coach Keely McDonald '00 should see some familiar faces on Princeton's sideline this Saturday when her squad travels to New Jersey. McDonald was an assistant coach for the then-No.1 Tigers last season when they narrowly defeated Brown by a score of 5-4.

W. WATER POLO: Bruno is heading to Bloomington, Ind., for the Eastern Championships this weekend. The Bears are the sixth seed in the field and will open up play against third-seeded Princeton.

Sunday, May 1

Dave Zucconi '55 5k Run: The third annual race to commemorate the beloved Brown sports enthusiast, the run will kick off at 9:30 a.m. in front of the old Marvel Gymnasium. Organized by SAAC, all proceeds will go to the Rhode Island Make-A-Wish Foundation.
