Web Update: Pagan '06 drowns while vacationing in Mexico

Luis Pagan '06, a 22-year-old senior who lived in Providence for much of his life, went missing Jan. 12 while swimming in rough waters off the coast of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca, where he was vacationing with a friend. Pagan's body was found on Jan. 16, according to the Providence Journal.

Administrators informed the Brown community of Pagan's disappearance in a campus-wide e-mail sent Jan. 16.

After a strong current carried Pagan beyond a designated swimming area, lifeguards decided conditions were too risky to attempt a rescue, said Pagan's sister-in-law, Carol Pagan, according to a Jan. 16 article in the Providence Journal.

Pagan's family was notified of his disappearance Jan. 13.

In the e-mail to the Brown community, Dean of the College Paul Armstrong and David Greene, vice president for campus life and student services, explained the circumstances surrounding Pagan's disappearance and offered support to his family and friends.

"Many on campus will recall Luis' warmth, imaginative intellect, and deft touch on the most difficult issues," Greene and Armstrong wrote.

Youth in Action, the Providence-based community activist group in which Pagan was an active member, has set up a memorial fund in his name.

The University plans to hold a memorial service for Pagan, and details will be provided via Morning Mail, according to the Jan. 16 e-mail.
