It takes a lot to get me to leave the comforts of College Hill. To be fair, occasionally I'll go on a Bed, Bath & Beyond spree or pretend Fish Co. isn't really a bad party in some frat's basement, but as a whole, even my most reclusive moments of bourgeois existentialism tend to end in a corner at Café Zog or hunched over something warm at Coffee Exchange. I never get much farther than Wickenden Street.
But I recently stumbled over another reason to leave the Hill: White Electric Coffee on Westminster Street. Sure, it's west of the freeway, but as coffee places go, it's nothing shy of exquisite.
At first glance, White Electric might seem misnamed - the room doesn't feature neon blue lighting and it isn't conventionally artsy (no worn-in velvet chairs and shabby carpets). The seemingly simple ambiance is so striking because it is so plain: it features a simple divider sectioning off some tables and chairs from the line to the counter; the counter is plain with no superfluities. Yet, a deep aroma fills in the shortfalls of the small room.
What really makes White Electric capable of having such a potentially pathetic name is that its coffee is just superb. The coffee is flavorfully rich, yet utterly smooth. My mocha was powerful yet subtle - did I taste cinnamon in it also?
Overall, White Electric Coffee will dazzle you with its intimate backdrop and even more intimate coffee.
