'Ruthless' wins lottery pick contest

The makers of "Ruthless," a video about a bear attacking campus, will have a choice of any room on campus next year after earning the most votes for their video in Residential Council's annual First Pick Competition.

The video tells the story of a group of students being chased by a bear. At the end, Ruth Simmons is revealed as the mastermind behind the bear attack.

Students voted on "Ruthless" and eight other videos both online and at a screening of the movies on Feb. 19.

"We thought we had the best video," said cast member Will Riedel '12. "But we didn't really actively campaign as much as other groups, so we didn't know" if "Ruthless" would win.

The movie uses camera effects, stunts and realistic props. In one scene, Riedel appears to be jumping off the spiral staircase at Graduate Center.

"We built a person doll and threw it off of the Grad Center five or six times," said "Ruthless" director Anish Sarma '12. "It just took so long to get right but it was so worth it."

Sarma said he thought the cameo from Simmons helped. "I don't think it single-handedly made the movie work, but it was definitely a key element and it also helped us get some publicity."

The ten freshmen have not decided where they are going to live next year. "We're looking at a lot of places now," Riedel said. "We really have no idea yet."
