Paxson and Hayes detail initial decision-making process behind Excellence in Brown Athletics Initiative

After the University announced last month that it would transition 11 varsity sports teams to club status and promote club co-ed sailing and women’s sailing to varsity, an outpouring of support flooded in for the demoted teams.

At a game this season, the women's basketball team faced off against Merrimack College — where new head coach Monique Leblanc coached for nine years.

Monique LeBlanc was named the new head coach of the women’s basketball team Friday. LeBlanc comes to Brown after spending nine years as the head coach at Merrimack College and before that, three seasons as assistant coach at Bucknell University.

Ricky Cabanillas ’23 defeated Matt Swanson of Binghamton and  Matt Kolonia of Bucknell to guarantee a top-eight placement.


Brown wrestling combines for one placer, 10-20 record at EIWAs

The wrestling team was led by Ricky Cabanillas ’23 at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships, who placed seventh at 149 lbs.

Bastianelli has fought to a 17-11 record this season, which includes three pins and three technical falls.

Nino Bastianelli ’21 picked up two crucial victories this weekend to close out the wrestling team’s regular season, helping the Bears edge Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association rivals Harvard and Sacred Heart.

Sage Matsushima ’23, Miku Takabayashi ’22, Taylor Seaman ’21 and Sarah Welch ’20 all finished in the top three of their respective races while setting school records at the 2020 Ivy League Championships. Seaman ends weekend with multiple top-three finishes.


Brown women’s swimming and diving finishes 5th at Ivies, sets four school records

The women’s swimming and diving team placed fifth at the 2020 Ivy League Championships, finishing the four-day event with 843 points. Princeton won the meet with 1,569 points, edging second-place Harvard, which finished with 1,462 points.

On Saturday, Ijeoma Uche broke Brown’s long jump record.

Ijeoma Uche ’21 broke the University long jump record Saturday with a jump of 20 feet, 6.5 inches at the Yale Giegengack Indoor Invitational. She shattered her own previous University record of 20 feet, 3 inches that she set last season.

The men’s basketball team scored a win 75-63 against Penn on Friday. They lost 73-54 against Princeton on Saturday.

The men’s basketball team rallied from 11 points down in the first half against Penn Friday to dominate the second half and emerge with a 75-63 road victory. But the Bears failed to make another comeback against Princeton Saturday, falling behind by 13 at halftime and eventually losing 73-54.

After two weeks of training, Bruno will head to Columbia on Feb. 15, hoping to bounce back from an upsetting double loss.

The wrestling team dropped both of its dual meets to Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association rivals Penn and Princeton in two tightly contested bouts at the Pizzitola Sports Center this weekend.

Charlie Faber ’21 (133 lbs) dominated his Binghamton opponent in a 15-6 win, and challenged Cornell’s No. 4 Chas Tucker in an 8-3 defeat.

The wrestling team notched its first victory of the year with a 19-14 triumph over Binghamton University Saturday before falling 36-4 to No. 22 Cornell later that day.
